Take Your Kids to the Zoo, the DoSeum and Kiddie Park
The San Antonio Zoo in Brackenridge Park is a wonderland of all kinds of animals living in habitats nestled along trails and amongst lush foliage. You can ride the train or the Zootennial Carousel or visit the spectacular butterfly garden. Near the zoo is the DoSeum, San Antonio’s children’s museum that inspires kids to tap into their inner curiosity and learn through play. Kiddie Park, the oldest children’s amusement park in the United States, is also nearby. Though renovated in 2009, Kiddie Park has maintained all of its original, 1920s-style rides.
Sample a Puffy Taco
These are the tacos that San Antonio is famous for! Fluffy, pillowy, wonderfully greasy and utterly delicious, puffy tacos are great whether stuffed with beef, chicken, pork, avocado or tofu. Made of fresh masa that is deep-fried to puffy perfection, puffy tacos are truly a San Antonio staple. Henry’s and Ray’s Drive-In are two famous spots to check out, but there are plenty of excellent options, both newer and more established, all over town.
Visit the Historic Majestic Theater
Whether you love live music, magic, Broadway shows or family-friendly performances, downtown San Antonio’s historic Majestic Theatrer has something for you. This summer, the theater will be hosting legendary musical acts like ZZ Top, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Diana Ross, as well as magician David Blaine, touring Broadway shows like Finding Neverland, and live children’s shows like Matilda the Musical and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in concert.
Remember the Alamo
Well, don’t just remember this historic fort that was the site of the legendary Battle of the Alamo—explore and experience it. One of the best things about visiting the Alamo during the summer? Thanks to its stone construction, it’s deliciously cool inside. Situated right in the midst of downtown, the Alamo isn’t just for school field trips and tourists. Rich with the complicated history of this beautiful city, it’s also a great place for residents to explore. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium and wax museum, directly across the plaza from the Alamo itself, is also worth a visit.
Tour the River Walk
What would summer in San Antonio be without a ’rita at the River Walk? Even those who aren’t interested in sampling the many flavors, sizes and colors of margaritas that can be had at the restaurants and cantinas along the River Walk can still enjoy the area’s other attractions. Think great Mexican food, gentle boat rides along the river, shopping for colorful Mexican imports, gorgeous and historic hotels and more.
Take a Mini Road Trip
Want to get out of town? A two-hour drive or less outside of San Antonio will bring you to a variety of small towns and other sites that are well worth a visit. Go antique shopping and take in some live country music at legendary Gruene Hall in Gruene, just north of San Antonio in New Braunfels. John T. Floore’s Country Store, the cafe and bar where Willie Nelson first played back in the early 1960s, is only a 40-minute drive northwest of central San Antonio, and still hosts incredible musical acts (including Nelson himself, on occasion).
Willing to travel a bit further? Less than an hour and a half from San Antonio lies Fredericksburg, where you can climb the enormous granite dome of Enchanted Rock before heading into town for sausage and beer at a traditional German eatery. Don’t miss browsing at Dooley’s, the local five-and-dime store that was founded nearly 100 years ago.
