One in seven deaths in the United States is linked to heart disease. Coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke—all heart conditions—represent the number one cause of death in the United States. Over 92 million Americans are living with some type of cardiovascular disease or are experiencing the after-effects of a stroke.
Since 1924, the American Heart Association has been working to fight heart disease through research, public health policy and education. The organization has set an ambitious goal for 2020: to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% and to reduce the deaths from heart disease and stroke by 20%.
Each year, the American Heart Association hosts the annual Austin Heart Walk to bring the community together to have fun, get inspired and support a meaningful cause. The owner of ABC Home & Commercial Services in Austin, Bobby Jenkins, is on the Board of Directors of the local affiliate.
Austin Heart Walk 2017
ABC is proud to serve as a local sponsor for the 2017 Austin Heart Walk, which will take place on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Long Center. The event opens at 7am. Participants can choose between a 5k run, a 5k walk and a 1 mile walk. The Heart Walk will end with fun activities for the entire family.
Strollers and leashed dogs are allowed on the walk. The route is handicap accessible and restrooms are available at the event expo site, along with a food tend and light refreshments. The Walk will take place, rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, check the event website for more information about the event status.
This is ABC’s sixth year to be involved in the Austin Heart Walk. During that time, the company has helped raise over $120,000 to save people from heart disease and stroke. ABC’s fundraising goal for the 2017 Heart Walk is $30,000. To reach that goal, the company and its employees have hosted bingo nights, office lunches, bake sales and car washes.
Austinites can purchase raffle tickets for $5 each which give you a chance to win a 2010 Ford F150 truck. All proceeds from this ABC-sponsored raffle will go directly to the American Heart Association. Over 70 ABC employees are registered to participate in the 2017 Austin Heart Walk. You can join one of ABC’s teams or help the company meet its fundraising goal by donating here.
“I’m thankful to our dedicated employees and customers who help us support the American Heart Association every year through the Heart Walk,” ABC owner Bobby Jenkins said. “I’m proud that ABC has been a part of this effort to save lives and help Americans reduce their risk of developing heart disease.”
