A Child’s Hope Coffee Featured at Central Market’s Coffee Fest

A Child's Hope

Coffee. For many of us, it’s a necessity in the morning. A ritual to get our day off to a good start. A well-deserved break in the afternoon.

Did you realize that a cup of coffee can change a child’s life?

ABC Commits To Helping Haitian Children

After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, members of the pest control industry in the United States traveled to the island nation to offer humanitarian aid. Haiti has long been the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, so the government struggled to support its citizens as they worked to rebuild after this catastrophic event.

Raleigh Jenkins, the owner of the Houston branch of ABC Home & Commercial Services, decided he wanted to do something more to help, particularly for Haiti’s children. Working together with a few colleagues and friends, A Child’s Hope was born.

A Child’s Hope Means A Brighter Future For Haiti

A Child’s Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a safe, loving, and supportive Christian home for over 300 lost and abandoned children in La Montagne, Haiti. The goal is to create a self-sustaining community that will nurture the children physically, emotionally, and spiritually. “Most Haitian orphanages are designed to keep kids fed and provide shelter,” explained Jenkins. “We’re creating a place where kids can grow, learn, and become productive citizens and leaders of Haiti.”

Five buildings have already been completed on the facility’s grounds, which will eventually include:

  • a dining facility;
  • schools;
  • barns and silos;
  • housing for the children, staff, and guests;
  • sports facilities and
  • fields and ponds for farming and fishing.

Current Projects

In 2017, ABC staff will travel back to Haiti to launch an exciting new project in partnership with Freedom Solar Power. Freedom Solar will install a 100% off-grid solar system to provide a sustainable source of electricity to A Child’s Hope. Freedom Solar will donate the labor for the project, and SunPower will donate the solar panels. Once installed, the 20-kilowatt solar array and battery backup will provide 100% of A Child’s Hope’s energy needs.

Installing a dependable source of electricity is critical at this stage of the organization’s growth. “Solar power will allow us to build an aquaponics farm to raise fresh fish and grow nutritious, organic produce,” explained Jenkins. “Solar will allow us to refrigerate or freeze that food so it doesn’t spoil and the children have a constant, reliable source of food. Solar will allow us to light our facilities. It’s a life-changer.”

Haiti Still Reeling From Hurricane Matthew

Haiti needs our help now more than ever. The country suffered another recent setback when Hurricane Matthew landed in late 2016. The Category 5 storm led to the loss of life of 1,000 Haitians and massive devastation. Months after the storm, Haitians are still recovering, but humanitarian organizations working on the ground estimate that 400,000 people still face hunger and

One of the ways the organization raises money for these ambitious plans and provides local jobs is through the sale of 100% Arabica coffee grown in Haiti’s mountains. All of the proceeds from the sale of the coffee go directly to support A Child’s Hope. The coffee is available for purchase online.
