Pro Pool Tips for your Summer Vacation

follow these pro pool safety for summer in texasSchool is out for summer, and we’re ready for a vacation!

Like most families, you’ve probably planned some sort of pool-related fun for the summer. Or maybe you’ve planned an all-out trip to the beach. Either way, we have put together a list of pro-tips for the pool that we’d love to share with our ABC family blog readers. These eight safety measures will ensure that your summer vacation isn’t disturbed by any scraped knees, sunburns, or worse.

#ProPoolTips Number 1: Always swim with buddies.  Tweet it!

Even the best of swimmers should refrain from swimming alone. Swimming solo is hazardous because should something go wrong, no one is there to help or call for help. Plus, swimming alone isn’t very much fun. If you’re swimming with friends and family, you can take better selfies!

#ProPoolTips Number 2: Keep floating devices nearby. Tweet it!

This is an easy one to follow because everyone loves pool noodles and inflatable lounging chairs. Floating devices need to be nearby the pool at all times. Pool inflatables are especially important if there are small kids around. Pool noodles are actually great because they can be used to reach into the deep-end when someone wanders out too far.

#ProPoolTips Number 3: Sit back. Relax! Don’t run. Tweet it!

poolsafety_blog_2The first rule we all learn when going to the pool is, “No running!” It may be hard to remember because we’ve heard it so many times. But this is a really important pool safety tip that must be mentioned for obvious reasons: water on the ground and fast movement do not mix. Even if there aren’t puddles by the pool, your feet will still be wet, which can cause you to trip. If your kids are having trouble remembering this rule, make a game out of it. Instead of letting kids play racing games say, “Last one in the pool wins!” and give your kids a treat for following the rules.

#PoolProTips Number 4: Protect your eyes and your skin. Tweet it!

poolsafety_blog_5Sunglasses aren’t just for looking cool in trendy Austin. Wearing shades by the pool is a must if you want to keep those eyes healthy by protecting from the damaging sun. Look for waterproof sunscreens at least 45 SPF or higher, especially during the hottest months.

#PoolProTips Number 5: Clear toys and shoes from walkways. Tweet it!

If a toy doesn’t float, it doesn’t belong near the pool. Toys become a hazard when they are left along the poolside walkway. A child may whine when asked to put indoor toys away, but they will be even more unhappy with a scraped knee. Shoes, purses, and other items should also be kept away from the ground near the pool.

#PoolProTips Number 6: Keep bug spray available. Tweet it!

poolsafety_blog_6Mosquito season is well underway, and we’ve already been fielding calls from families looking to rid their backyard spa area of these pesky creatures. If you aren’t ready to exterminate these blood-sucking annoyances, the least you should do is keep good DEET bug spray by the pool. If you are ready to tell the mosquitoes to bug off, give us a call.

#PoolProTips Number 7: Get your CPR certification. Tweet it!

poolsafety_blog_8Sadly, drownings occur most frequently with young children. If you have kids, you should get CPR-certified. CPR saves lives. You can get CPR-certified in Austin by your local EMS. Learn more.

#PoolProTip Number 8: Stay hydrated with cold drinks. Tweet it!

poolsafety_blog_3Keeping cool and hydrated is vital during hot Texas summers, but it is equally as important wherever your vacation takes you. Whether you’re poolside at a resort or in your backyard, try to drink some water or other caffeine-free beverages at least once for every hour that is spent outdoors by a pool. The last thing you want ruining your summer vacation is a heat stroke.
