Are you thinking of starting a vegetable garden, but don’t know where to begin?
The first thing to know is the best place in your area to get materials. These four gardening supply stores in San Antonio will provide you with everything you need to start your vegetable garden.
Fanick’s Garden Center (southeast)
Nestled a few minutes off Interstate 10, Fanick’s Garden Center offers a wide variety of gardening products in a picturesque setting. Originally founded by Eddie Fanick Sr. in 1939, the store still belongs to the Fanick family, who are regularly found helping customers and doling out advice. Fannick’s also offers a variety of events at the store, including a spring vegetable seminar on March 19, 2016, from 10:30 am to noon. You can also join their frequent shopper club and receive 20% off your first purchase (in addition to other discounts).
Shades of Green (central)
Located on West Sunset Road just east of Highway 281, Shades of Green is a full-service nursery specializing in South Texas native and adaptive plants. The store was established in 1981 and has since become an advocate for organic gardening. They have even created their own line of organic fertilizer. Shades of Green also offers a large variety of plants, seeds, flowers, trees, garden accessories, and gift items. They hold Saturday seminars on a range of topics.
The Garden Center (northwest)
Near the intersection of Bandera Road and 1604, The Garden Center was originally started by Gerald Harrell in 1985. His son, Wayne, now runs the business on a 5-acre plot of land. Along with the wide variety of plants, trees, pest control, and soil products, the Garden Center hosts several food trucks regularly on-site, a farmer’s market on Friday mornings, and Saturday morning seminars on various agricultural topics. On Saturday, March 26th at 10:30 am, David Rodriguez will present a citrus & veggie seminar.
Rainbow Gardens – (multiple locations)
With two locations, one northwest, and the other northeast, Rainbow Gardens offers a total area of 10 acres to house a wide variety of plants, gardening products, water features, and xeriscape environments. The store has been operating since 1976, and its beautiful gardens are a destination unto themselves. Seminars are offered most Saturday mornings. They also offer a kids’ gardening club, which meets once a month to teach children the skill of gardening.
