Everyone knows that Austin has live music, San Antonio has the world-famous Riverwalk, and Dallas is all about luxury shopping. Meanwhile, Houston residents know that while maybe not as flashy as the other cities in Texas, their city has quietly become one of the best cities in which to live in the entire country.
Let’s take a look why we are glad to call Houston home. With a vibrant economy, beautiful open spaces, world-class museums, star-studded sports teams, and a long list of fantastic things to do in Houston, we at ABC Home & Commercial Services are thankful to live and work in such a great city.
Big City, Big Money
As Texas’ largest city, Houston has a thriving economy, with the tech, energy and construction sectors remaining healthy and driving growth. In fact, Houston is second only to New York in headquartering Fortune 500 businesses.
With the healthy economic outlook, as well as diverse culture, nightlife, and access to the Texas Gulf Coast, Houston is a great place for young and old. According to the most recent study released by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research, Houstonians report they are happy with their location, job opportunities, and cost of living. Whether you are just visiting or looking for a new spot to try out, you have countless choices if you are looking for fun things to do in Houston at night – or during the day.
Pulling Out All the Stops
A solid base of economic satisfaction is excellent, but Houston has taken it a step further. It offers an empire of activities for everyone and every budget, with food choices, museums, well-planned green spaces, world-class sports teams, and fairs and festivals for every interest.
Within the Houston Museum District, for example, you will find a total of nineteen museums within four different, walkable zones that provide a source of daily inspiration. Each zone provides a path for art lovers to explore, with a suggested order so that you won’t miss a thing. Have a zen moment in Zone 1 and explore the Houston Center for Photography, the Rothko Chapel, and The Menil Collection. Or head over to Zone 3 and explore the traveling show in the Zilkha Gallery at The Contemporary Arts Museum then visit the Museum of Fine Arts and experience the Degas: A New Vision Exhibit first-hand.
Keeping the Kiddos Happy, Too
Activities for kids and families are abundant. Discovery Green in the heart of Downtown Houston offers a central location full of nature and life year-round, with lots of things to do with the kids. During the summer, children can enjoy the greenbelt with splash zones to cool off while listening to live music. Face painters, balloon artists and cart vendors with ice cream (and beer for moms and dads) as well as other treats give parents an easy way to relax with the kids.
Seasonal activities include:
- The Fiddle Festival, a rotating concert series open to participation for all ages
- Scream on the Green, a festival and costume contest
- Sundays on the Green, a rotating list of activities that have previously included family yoga, Caribbean music, and games.
You’ll never run out of things to do in Houston with kids.
Zany, Brainy Things
Kids of all ages can’t forget that Houston is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Space exploration is at your fingertips as you take a tour of the Space Center. You can even extend your mission by enrolling in one of the many space camps and learn any number of facets of the Space Program, such as mission control, spacewalking, engineering or physics.
Parents: looking for a fun way to spend date night? If you are looking for something other than dinner and a movie, here is a list of fun things to do in Houston for couples.
All the Bases Covered for Sports Fans
No doubt about it. Houston is a sports town, with both major and minor leagues represented. Fans are loyal and often remind other cities that their teams play in Houston proper and not a suburb.
- Baseball’s Houston Astros play at Minute Maid Park, located Downtown and adjacent to Discovery Green. Restaurants and activities are plentiful for both pre-game and post-game enjoyment.
- Basketball’s Houston Rockets are a hometown favorite, despite not enjoying a championship since the mid-1990s. Tickets are relatively easy to come by, and compared to other cities, accessible and inexpensive.
- Rounding out the Major Leagues, Houston Texans Football have a state-wide following as the only other football team to play in Texas besides the Dallas Cowboys.
World-Class Medicine and Healthcare
Three miles south of downtown sits the most precious gem in Houston’s crown, The Texas Medical Center. Not one complex, but forty-four, it includes the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as other hospitals, research facilities and academic extensions of UT, Texas A&M, and Rice. The Texas Medical Center’s mission is to cluster non-profit institutions on behalf of medical research and care.
