There’s no doubt about it: Orlando is known for its theme parks. From Walt Disney World and Islands of Adventure to Epcot and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter—people gather from all over the world to witness the fun and excitement of these parks. A trip to either of these is a guaranteed memorable experience. As all of us who call Orlando home know well, there are plenty of things to do in Orlando besides theme parks.
Our Favorite Things To Do In Orlando
From indoor activities to exploring the great outdoors to things to do in Orlando for free, there’s something for everyone in the family. There’s no reason to stay home or in a hotel room in a city like Orlando. Read along as we tour our city’s lesser-known but not-less-fun activities.
Visit a Museum
Museums are often associated with a trip to New York City or the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. And while those are beautiful, there are plenty of well-known museums in Orlando. One popular destination is the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. Located in Winter, Florida—just a short drive outside the city—this museum contains one of the world’s largest collections of Tiffany glass.
Other trip-worthy museums include science museums, art museums, and even a few unique ones. A few of our favorites are the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orange County Regional History Center, and the Wycliffe Discovery Center.
For those who don’t mind a short drive, consider visiting The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Get Acquainted with Nature
If you appreciate wildlife and nature, plan a trip to Orlando Wetlands Park. Now open year-round, the city escape offers beautiful images of wildlife preserves. The park opened in 1987 as the world’s first large-scale, man-made wetland treatment system. Today, the 1,650 acres of pasture areas offer visitors a look into nature.
Another outdoor activity is found in the Everglades at Shingle Creek. For all the experienced kayakers out there, this spot is for you. Venture out solo and paddle your way through the mossy rivers.
Stroll through 50 acres of majestic oaks and tropical and semi-tropical plants at the Leu Gardens, where you can also tour a historic 19th-century home.
I am looking for things to do in Orlando that are free. Head outdoors to the Kraft Azalea Garden on Lake Maitland in Winter Park, the University of Central Florida’s Arboretum, Lake Eola Park, or Big Tree Park in Sanford.
Pick Out A New Outfit (or two)
If you’re looking for a bargain, head to one of Orlando’s infamous outlet malls. Home to two major outlet centers, shoppers can scoop up deals and steals from upscale fashion brands like Michael Kors, BCBG, Lucky Brand, and more. Don’t worry about missing out on Florida’s beautiful weather, either. Both locations are outdoors, with plenty of benches and food options for a well-deserved shopping break.
Cheer For the Local Team
Orlando has a few professional sports teams, including the Orlando City Soccer Club, the Orlando Pride, and the Orlando Magic. The men’s and women’s soccer seasons finish in October, but you can cheer on the players next season at their new stadium slated for the 2017 seasons. The regular season begins in the spring and runs through mid-fall.
While soccer might be over, the Orlando Magic season is underway. You can catch a game at their home court, the Amway Center, that’s located downtown.
Take a Stroll Downtown
Speaking of downtown, this vibrant area is filled with trendy neighborhoods, worldly dining options, and energetic nightlife. Regardless of what you consider a perfect night out, there’s always something going on. You’ll find something exciting while visiting downtown, from nightclubs to lounges to sporting events.
