Expert Tips to Get Your Home Winter-Ready

Even without snow, East Texas winters bring chilly winds, heavy rain, and unexpected cold snaps that can test your home’s comfort and durability. A few quick checks now can help prevent costly repairs and keep your home healthy all season long.

Homeowner Tips for Winter Readiness

Winter in East Texas might not bring blizzards, but it still comes with chilly winds, heavy rain, and sudden cold snaps that can take a toll on your home.  Our expert pest, lawn, and handymen teams compiled a few simple steps to help you care your home and avoid expense repair costs.

1. Seal Up Before It Cools Down

Start with the basics: check your windows, exterior doors, and garage seals. A tight seal keeps warm air in and cold drafts and pests out.

  • Pro tip: Close your garage and turn off the lights. If you see sunlight peeking through, it’s time to replace those seals before temperatures drop.

2. Keep Rodents and Critters Outside

Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a dime, making your cozy home their winter retreat. Inspect entry points around your foundation, vents, and doors to block their access before they move in.

3. Watch Your Firewood Storage

Before cozying up by the fire, inspect your firewood for pests. Subterranean termites, which thrive in East Texas soil, can easily travel from a woodpile to your home’s structure if not managed properly.

  • Pro tip: Never stack wood directly on the ground, against the fence, or beside your home; this gives termites and other insects a direct path inside.

4. Check Gutters and Siding After Fall Storms

Fall foliage can clog gutters, leading to overflow and water damage during heavy rain. Make sure they’re clean and securely attached. While you’re at it, take a look at your siding and fences for damage that could worsen over the winter and replace boards as needed.

5. Prep Your Lawn for a Healthy Spring

Late fall and early winter are the perfect times to apply fertilizer and pre-emergent treatments. This helps your turf stay strong through colder weather and ensures a faster green-up when spring arrives. Adding a layer of mulch to garden beds also protects plant roots from freezing temperatures.
